A hand woven basket of local Calabrian figs, stuffed with walnut, candied Calabrian orange peel & thickly coated in dark chocolate.
Our producers buy the figs directly from local growers, who bring them over to his workshop after they have dried them in the sun. The local fig variety, Fico Dottato del Cosentino, makes a very fleshy and soft dried fig, with very small seeds.
The figs are then baked and after this sprinkled with water to give them back part of their moisture. When cool they are cut, stuffed with a piece of walnut and a piece of candied orange peel, pressed in wide trays and baked again. The whole process is done by hand.
They are then coated in dark chocolate and packed in the baskets, hand made by one of the last basket makers of Calabria
Roberto started making these figs for Antonio's restaurant when Pino, a neighbour from his village who had moved to London, offered some to Antonio to try. The rest is history...
Roberto's family has now been working figs in Calabria for 3 generations, and are still made to the same recipes as his Grandfather created.
